Donaghmore pupils put the right foot forward!

11th Jun 2016

The P6/7 Donaghmore Primary School children are celebrating their recent success after being hailed overall winners of the Greenpower Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) Formula Goblin NI Competition 2016. They also received awards for the best submitted Portfolio and best presented team.

This is the fourth consecutive year the school has participated in Greenpower’s Goblin Challenge. The Goblin project aims to inspire children to take an interest in engineering in a fun and innovative way. Children are required to build their very own functioning and drivable electric car.

This year Miss Hannah Barnes, a Stranmillis University College student, helped organise this project. There was a great team spirit in school as staff, families and friends volunteered to work with the P6/7 class as they built their Goblin Car from scratch and took on the difficult challenge of converting it into a shoe.

The Goblin project permeated many curriculum areas including Literacy, Numeracy, World Around Us, PDMU and Art. Cross curricular skills such as Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities and ICT were innate as the Donaghmore All Star took shape.

This years’ project culminated in a race event at Kirkistown, Co Down on 11th June. A team of Donaghmore children competed against teams from a number of other schools and when points were totalled the team from Donaghmore Primary School was declared overall winner of the Greenpower Goblin NI Competition 2016.
